Functions of Agency/Department:

CEO Communications is offering an internship related to communications, public relations, social media and media relations.

CEO Communications is responsible for providing timely and accurate information to the public and members of the media, communicating internally with County of Orange employees, and providing coordination and support to County departments’ public information officers.

Intern Duties/Responsibilities:

Interns will assist staff in the day-to day activities within the busy CEO Communications office. Students or recent graduates selected for the position perform a range of duties from very basic activities to those requiring higher skill levels and professional expertise. Duties may include: assisting in the preparation and distribution of news clippings; assisting in the preparation and distribution of press releases; providing support with social media sites; developing short videos for distribution via social media; responding to questions from the public and community organizations; assisting with newsletter; posting updates to the County’s Intranet and public website; creating and updating resource material; and interacting with other governmental- and community-based organizations.

Educational Requirements:

This internship is best suited for students or recent graduates with majors in the following areas: public relations, political science, marketing, communications, journalism or related fields.

Skills, Training or Qualifications:

Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in working with Microsoft Office Suite; thorough knowledge of social media platforms, including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook; experience in developing/sharing videos via social media; detail oriented and reliable.

Time Commitment:

Minimum 20 - 25 hours per week for one or more months. Hours can be scheduled in 2- to 8-hour blocks of time during regular business hours (Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. -  5 p.m.). Applicants able to schedule the maximum hours/duration listed for the internship typically gain a more in-depth experience.

Required Background Screening:

Prior to placement, applicants may be asked to submit contact information for reference checks, and a LiveScan criminal record check through the California Department of Justice will be conducted. A Social Security number and valid state-issued driver’s license are required for the LiveScan.

Benefits Available to Intern:

Although this is an unpaid internship that does not lead to paid employment or include employee benefits, students and recent graduates are offered an excellent opportunity to gain extensive experience in managing public relations, marketing and social media campaigns within a large government agency.
