August 1st through November 30th 2019

Let your story become part of the library!

We welcome art about stories of coming to California or that share cultural traditions.

Adults can pick up a free blank notebook, fill it with art, and return it to the library by November 30th. Art will be exhibited and the notebooks will become part of the library's collection. Opening exhibition and reception held in December.

Notebooks can be picked at the Fountain Valley, Garden Grove Main, and Westminster Libraries.

This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Visit www.calhum.org.

Hicks Haul Fitness Run: Extended 10K Distance

Join us for a road run in the Irvine Ranch Open Space. We’ll run on the paved Hicks Haul Road, up to a 10k (6.5 miles) distance. We’ll begin with some warm-up exercises before we set off on our run. The route is up and over Loma Ridge, providing both uphill and downhill training on both the out and the back portions. Ages 12 and up; minors must be accompanied by an adult. History Hounds: Heritage Hill

History is full of mystery, and the clues are waiting to be discovered! become a History Hound, joining OC parks staff as we sniff out clues about Orange County's past at Heritage Hill Historical Park.

Dig back into time to learn about native people living in kiichas along Serrano Creek. Sleuth out the ranchero lifestyle as they roamed cattle fields in the nearby canyons. Explore a not far-fetched farm home that was originally built without plumbing. Put the clues together to discover how the past became today.

Family Hike: Round Canyon

Enjoy nature with friends and family in Round Canyon. We hike along a fairly flat trail as we watch for red-tailed hawks and mule deer. This activity originates in the City of Irvine and travels into OC Parks’ Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve. The hike averages 2-3 miles round trip at an easy pace with a medium level of interpretation. Ages 6 and up; minors must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.

OC Parks invites you to join local herpetologist Steve Bledsoe at O’Neill Regional Park to learn all about snakes that can be found in Orange County.

This family-friendly event will feature a live reptile display with local snake species. Come learn how to identify snakes, where they live and what to do when you encounter one on park trails.

There will also be an informative presentation on rattlesnakes of Orange County.

Snakes of Orange County will be offered on two dates: June 15 and August 24. The same program will take place both dates.

Join us for this evening program as we explore biodiversity at the local level with that most diverse group of organisms, the insects! Taking advantage of the fact that UV light is highly visible to most insects, we will attract them by using black-lights (low energy/low frequency UV lights). We can then examine them up close and record the different types (and their numbers). Ages 7 and up; minors must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.

Astronomy Night
OC Parks - Laguna Coast Wilderness Park
 Location: Laguna Coast Wilderness Park

Join Orange County Astronomers for a view of the summer night sky. Enjoy the opportunity to look through telescopes at Jupiter, Saturn, various stars, and other celestial objects. Visit the Science Heads' Mobile Observatory. Enjoy activities in the Nix Nature Center.

  • No hiking involved. Come prepared with layers of clothing to keep warm, a flashlight, and a cell phone to learn about astronomy apps.
  • You may also bring drinks and snacks. The presentation will start at 7:30 pm. The gate will close at 7:45 pm and open again at 9:30 pm, so plan to arrive on time and stay until the end.
  • Ages 7 and up; children under 18 accompanied by an adult.
  • Mobile Observatory presentation and activities will be provided even during overcast conditions.
  • Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area/Nix Nature Center (west side of Laguna Canyon Rd/SR-133, approximately 3.5 miles south of 405/approximately 5 miles south of I-5.
