Paintings Evoking Photorealism on Display at John Wayne Airport

From September 18, 2017 – October 18, 2017, a series of paintings evoking photorealism by artist Gene Swanson will be on display at John Wayne Airport (JWA) as part of JWA's Community Focus Space Program (CFS). These works can be viewed on the Departure (upper) Level near security screening areas in Terminals A, B and C, and on the Arrival (lower) Level adjacent to Baggage Carousels 1 and 4.

Young OC Artists Honored for Being Recycling Champions

Five young artists, each inspired to be great recycling champions, stood on hallowed ground while their images and artwork were displayed on the Angel Stadium big screen and the PA announcer introduced them to the crowd. Their moment came at the OC Waste & Recycling Poster Contest Awards Ceremony, held Friday, Sept. 15 ahead of the Angels game. The celebration was the culminating event for the contest winners. In addition to the recognition, they each served as honorary bat kids at an Angels baseball game during the previous week.

John Wayne Airport Offers Travel Tips for the Labor Day Holiday Weekend

John Wayne Airport (JWA) anticipates a busier-than-normal travel period from Thursday, August 31 through Tuesday, September 5 during the Labor Day holiday weekend. More than 169,000 passengers traveled through JWA during the same period in 2016 with the busiest travel days being the Thursday and Friday before and the Tuesday following Labor Day.

OC Animal Care Hosts Successful Clear the Shelters Event

The County of Orange's Animal Care shelter had incredible success during the Clear the Shelters event on Saturday, August 19, 2017, finding homes for 113 animals. The adoptions, which were $17 to the public (plus licensing fee, where applicable), were generously sponsored by Supervisor Shawn Nelson, Fourth District.

Unsecured Property Tax Payment Deadline on August 31

Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich reminds those with unsecured property taxes due for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017-18 relating to business property, leased equipment, boats and aircraft to submit payment by Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017 to avoid late charges. Any unsecured property tax payments received after Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017 that do not show a U.S. Postal Service date stamp for the 31st or earlier will be charged a 10 percent delinquent fee and a $75 processing fee.

The OC Health Care Agency (HCA) today released the "Opioid Overdose and Death in Orange County" report. Among key findings: the rate of opioid-related emergency department (ED) visits has more than doubled since 2005.

Hall of Administration Parking Lot to Permanently Close

Beginning July 26, the parking lot immediately west of the County of Orange Hall of Administration (HOA) will be permanently closed as crews move forward with the Civic Center Master Plan and the construction of a new Building 16.

The parking lot, also referred to as P4, is located at the intersection of Ross Street and Santa Ana Boulevard. To ensure continued availability of parking to Civic Center visitors, the County will be redirecting drivers to alternate parking locations listed at the following link: http://bit.ly/2vg5mfv.

Starting July 1, 2017, the County of Orange began a partnership with the nonprofit City Net for directed supplemental engagement services for individuals experiencing homelessness encamped along the Santa Ana River flood control channel.

Orange County Reports First Human West Nile Virus Infection of 2017

A Laguna Beach female in her 70s has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) infection, becoming the first human WNV infection in Orange County this year. The woman was found to be WNV-positive during routine testing at a blood bank last week. She was asymptomatic.

County to Make Final Bankruptcy Debt Payment, Hold Public Budget Hearings for Fiscal Year 2017-18 Budget

On July 1, 2017, the County of Orange will make the final debt service payment to bondholders of the Lease Revenue Refunding Bonds, Series 2005, retiring all bond debt related to the County's recovery from the 1995 Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing.

Orange County Launches Campaign to Raise Awareness of Child Sex Trafficking and Exploitation

The commercial sexual exploitation of children is a national and statewide epidemic that deserves our highest attention. On May 31, 2017, the County of Orange, in partnership with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), Association of California Cities-Orange County (ACCOC), Orange County Juvenile Court, Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force (OCHTTF), The Raise Foundation, and Vanguard University's Global Center for Women & Justice launched a campaign to raise awareness of child sex trafficking and exploitation, highlighting the theme: "Be the One to Help Out: Sex Trafficking. It’s Not What You Think. Children are Victims, Too."

Today the County of Orange opened the doors to its first year-round emergency shelter and service center. The shelter, named Bridges at Kraemer Place, will ultimately provide year-round shelter and services to 200 individuals each night who are experiencing homelessness.

Second Installment Property Tax Payment Deadline is Monday, April 10

Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich today reminds Orange County taxpayers that the second installment of property taxes is due no later than Monday, April 10, 2017. Payments not received by Monday, unless they have a United States Postal Service stamp on or before April 10, will incur a 10 percent late penalty plus a $23 fee.

Airline passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport decreased in February 2017 as compared with February 2016. In February 2017, the Airport served 711,010 passengers, a decrease of 7.5% when compared with the February 2016 passenger traffic count of 768,864. In February 2017, commercial aircraft operations decreased 7.9% and commuter aircraft operations decreased 64.6% when compared with February 2016 levels.

A former Orange County Sheriff's Department Deputy Sheriff II, pled guilty for defrauding the County of Orange of nearly $35,000 by making fraudulent statements and knowingly failing to disclose facts related to his workers’ compensation claim.

Voluntary Evacuations in Silverado Canyon and Activation of Emergency Operations Center

At 9:00 a.m. today, a voluntary evacuation for the Silverado Canyon burn area was issued by County of Orange public safety officials due to potential flooding and debris flows. The voluntary evacuation is for homes east of 30311 Silverado Canyon Road. This voluntary evacuation has the potential to be upgraded to a mandatory evacuation as the storm progresses.

OC Public Works Flood Control Channel Maintenance and Security Project

Beginning today, the County of Orange Public Works Department is beginning a Flood Control Channel Maintenance and Security Project adjacent to the County maintenance road along the east side of the Santa Ana River in Orange. The project area will stretch from Orangewood Ave. to just south of the Garden Grove Freeway (22), at levee slopes under the east and west sides of the Santa Ana Freeway (5) and under the east side of the Garden Grove Freeway (22).

Court Reinstates Call Center to Assist the Public with Criminal and Traffic Cases

The Superior Court of Orange County has opened a new call center to assist the public with services and information regarding criminal and traffic cases. Assistance is available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese by calling 657-622-8459. An automated phone system is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and customer service representatives are available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Court holidays. Since the center’s “soft launch” on January 11, representatives have assisted an average of 145 customers per day.

County of Orange Reports First Influenza-Reported Death of Season

The County of Orange Health Care Agency has confirmed Orange County's first influenza-related death in a person under 65 this season. A male in his 50s who was a resident of Laguna Woods died of complications related to influenza infection last week. Public Health Laboratory testing confirmed that he was infected with influenza A virus.

Health Care Agency Reports Rapid Increase in Flu Activity

The Health Care Agency reports a rapid increase of flu activity in Orange County over the past few weeks and reminds residents that it's not too late to vaccinate. More than 900 confirmed influenza cases have been reported by local medical providers to date this season. Nine adults between the ages of 18-64 and two children under 18 years of age have developed severe infection requiring a visit to intensive care.

Clerk-Recorder to Offer Extended Hours for Marriage Services this Valentine's Day

For those looking to tie the knot on Valentine's Day, look no further. To accommodate couples, Orange County Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen will be offering extended hours at his offices in Fullerton, Laguna Hills and at the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana this Valentine’s Day. The department will close at 5:30 pm instead of its normal closing hours to issue marriage licenses and perform marriage ceremonies.

Construction Impacts County Civic Center Parking

On January 13, the County of Orange Hall of Administration (HOA) parking lot will be fully closed as crews move forward with the Civic Center Master Plan and the demolition of the existing Building 16. After the full closure on January 13, the north portion of the lot will be closed, with intermittent full lot closures as needed.

County Reaches Settlement Agreement in Lawsuit on OCPW Flood Control Channel Maintenance Project

The County of Orange reached a final settlement in the matter of Diehl v. County of Orange, the lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Southern California (ACLU) challenging the County of Orange Public Works (OCPW) department maintenance project activities along the Santa Ana Riverbed.

Survey Shows Continuing Widespread Availability of Tobacco Products in Orange County

New research shows that in Orange County the availability of e-cigarettes has grown by 12 percentage points and nearly 21% since 2013. This finding is part of new research released today on the availability and marketing of tobacco products, alcohol, condoms and healthy and unhealthy food options in California stores that sell tobacco.

John Wayne Airport Posts January 2017 Statistics

Airline passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport increased in January 2017 as compared with January 2016. In January 2017, the Airport served 793,774 passengers, an increase of 1.2% when compared with the January 2016 passenger traffic count of 784,248.

Richard Sanchez, currently the Assistant Director of the County of Orange Health Care Agency (HCA), will now lead the agency as Director beginning March 31, 2017. Mixed Media Artworks Inspried by Ecosystems and Networks on Display at John Wayne Airport

From April 17, 2017 – June 15, 2017, a series of mixed media artworks by artist Richelle Gribble are on display at John Wayne Airport (JWA) as part of JWA's Community Focus Space Program. These paintings, drawings and prints may be viewed on the Departure (upper) Level near security screening areas in Terminals A, B and C, and on the Arrival (lower) Level adjacent to Baggage Carousels 1 and 4.

The County of Orange Health Care Agency (HCA) has issued the 2017 Award of Excellence to 3,285 Orange County food facilities to recognize local businesses for their outstanding food safety and sanitation practices during 2016.

New Report Reveals Drug and Alcohol Overdose Deaths

Today, the Orange County Health Care Agency (HCA) released the "Drug and Alcohol Morbidity and Mortality in Orange County" report that provides a summary of the leading causes of substance-related overdoses in Orange County. Compiled in collaboration with the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner division, the report found that the overall rate of drug/alcohol overdose deaths in the county increased by 82% since 2000.

County of Orange Opposes Bill 22

The County of Orange Board of Supervisors sent a letter to Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) declaring its opposition to Assembly Bill 22 (AB 22) which prevents the firing of public employees for being affiliated with the Communist Party. The bill, which passed the California Assembly by a 41-30 margin on May 8, 2017 was deleted by Assemblyman Bonta on May 17, 2017. The bill removed references to the Communist Party in existing law and no longer authorized that a public employee may be dismissed solely on the basis that the public employee is a member of, or advocate for, the Communist Party.

Test Your Way. Do it Today. National HIV Testing Day is Tuesday, June 27

June 27 marks National HIV Testing Day, which helps promote testing and early diagnosis of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. There are 6,762 individuals living with HIV disease in Orange County, and by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates, an additional 669 residents who have HIV and don't know it – some of whom will develop AIDS before realizing they are HIV-infected.

The OC Health Care Agency's 2016 Annual Ocean, Harbor & Bay Water Quality Report is now available online and provides a yearly analysis of bacteriological water quality data over a 17-year period for Orange County’s ocean recreational waters.

Orange County Clerk-Recorder Implements New Fictitious Business Name Statement Filing System

Orange County Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen announced the successful implementation of a new electronic Fictitious Business Name Statement (FBN) filing system. This new electronic system will make applying for Fictitious Business Name Statements more user friendly for business owners and will also reduce the duration of phone calls received by department staff regarding FBN issues.

Orange County Health Care Agency Issues Ocean Water Closure

The Orange County Health Care Agency's Environmental Health division has closed the bay water area at Harbor Marina in the City of Newport Beach. The spill of approximately 100 gallons was caused by a blockage in a private property owner's sewer lateral (pipe that connects a building to main sewer line in street).

OC residents might be tempted to ask that question if they visit one of the County's free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers on Saturday, July 22. That’s when OC Waste & Recycling is putting a twist on National Drive Thru Day, using the celebratory day to help increase awareness about bringing household hazardous waste to the proper place and making sure it stays out of landfills.

OC Treasurer and District Attorney/Public Administrator Team Up to Become First Government Agency in the Nation to Implement a Medallion Signature Guarantee Stamp Program

Orange County Treasurer Shari Freidenrich became the first local government "Certified Medallion User" of a Medallion Signature Guarantee Stamp after completing the training required by the program. She affixed the first Medallion Guarantee Stamp to several documents for the Office of the District Attorney/Public Administrator (OCDA/PA) Tony Rackauckas last week.

NBC4 Southern California and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles Announce Pet Adoption Drive “Clear the Shelters”

NBC4 Southern California / KNBC and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles / KVEA announced today the return of its pet adoption drive, Clear the Shelters (Desocupar los Albergues). Part of a nationwide campaign, Clear the Shelters involves more than 60 animal shelters and rescue organizations throughout Southern California, offering a reduced adoption fee of $20 on Saturday, August 19.

Safe Surrender Saves Lives in Orange County

A healthy baby was safely surrendered to Anaheim Fire & Rescue (AF&R) Station 1 late on Tuesday afternoon. The baby and mother were assessed by AF&R's Nurse Practitioner and Firefighter/Paramedics before being transported to a local hospital for care and observation. The baby is currently in the care of the County of Orange Social Services Agency’s Children and Family Services (CFS) division.

High Temperatures Bring Risk of Heat-Related Illnesses

Temperatures in most inland Orange County and surrounding mountain communities are expected to reach high temperatures in the 90s on Sunday, 8/27, warming to 95 to 105 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, increasing the risk of heat related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke for those who are more sensitive to heat.
